Garfield Park Academy is posting remote learning resources for students, parents and teachers, and highlights of our activities while we all work away from our school.
GPA Virtual Field Trips
August 12, 2020 – Using Padlet, Ms. Harmening pinned locations and attractions around the world that offer virtual tours and experiences on one interactive map. The map includes virtual tours and experiences including global cities, rollercoaster rides, dives with sea lions, historical sites and more. Staff are invited to provide more suggestions to add to the GPA Virtual Field Trip map.
April 27, 2020 – GPA’s Superintendent Dr. Steven Morse, visited a GPA student’s house to sign working papers.
We’re so proud of our students for their perseverance and work to find and get jobs as we face these significant challenges together!
The student’s caring mom also sent a message worth sharing with all:
“Live, love, laugh 😊”
April 22, 2020 – Ms. Jillian’s Class 14 celebrated Earth Day and Arbor Day by taking action. Students and staff identified activities that make a difference, one person at a time. Some students took out recyclables, others tended to plants in their yards, drank from reusable water bottles, and picked up litter.

April 21, 2020: Here is what parents are saying about GPA’s remote instructional program:
“It is not too much that [the student] felt overwhelmed or got lost, it wasn’t too little that he wasn’t gaining the academic and therapeutic skills he needs… he felt confident, engaged, and supported.”
April 20, 2020 – Ms. Megan did an amazing lesson on climate change with her class and the students had an option to answer the questions utilizing Seasaw or create a video. Check out one student’s video response. Ms. Megan and the other teachers have been doing an incredible job incorporating different strategies to help their students be successful.
April 9, 2020 – Our friends from Job Corps joined our Virtual Transition Classroom to speak about the opportunities the program offers. Job Corps offers vocational training free for students who qualify in a college-like setting. Some of the programs offered include careers in the Medical, Computer, Business, Culinary and the Building Trades. A big “thank you!” to our Job Corps Representative, Doron W., for taking the time to talk and work with us.
March 30, 2020 – March 30, 2020 – HUGE thanks to GPA staff members Ms. Sally, Mr. Dave and Ms. Mary, Ms. Lisa D., Ms. Lisa M., Ms. Maria, Ms. Bev, Ms. Crystal and Nurse Stacy for their help with delivering food to some of our student’s families during this trying time.
The families have been incredibly thankful as most of them have lost jobs. Thanks to community donations along with donations from various staff members we were able to provide a month’s worth of food to GPA families in need.
GPA Teacher Megan Carney posted this useful Google Slides Presentation for parents describing the remote learning resources our students are using while working at home.
